Obesity/Social or Political problem?

A few years back, Obama signed the “Child Nutrition Act”. The Act’s aim is to improve the quality of free meals in schools by providing schools with cash to regularly update food standards and allow more children to qualify for their meals. In a nutshell, the USDA will have the authority to set nutritional standards for all foods sold at schools in vending machines, lunch lines and school stores. Also, the USDA will set physical activity standards. Fighting obesity should not be a political fight. This issue affects everyone. Michelle Obama is also doing the right thing with her “Let’s Move” campaign at schools. Somebody has to take the lead in this fight.

How did we get to this point? Are we all to blame for this epedemic? Yes. We can sit back and blame the fast food industry for making even larger sizes, or we can face the problem head on with self-discipline. The choice is yours. Family, schools, and the media also have a role to play in combatting obesity. Proper exercise and diet are the key. Discussions about fat taxes on soda in some cities also needs closer inspection. We all have to come up with solutions, when it comes to tackling one of society’s biggest challenges, the fight against obesity.

  2. Thank you all for stopping by and sharing your comments! I’m sorry I couldn’t respond to each of you during this blog hop, I had my hands full with some family health issues that cropped up, but things have settled a bit now.Good luck to all of you and winners will be announced shortly.

  3. V – I was happy to hear that they found another plot, too. I was left wondering how someone like Horowitz could sleep at night, could look himself in the mirror, knowing that he had done that to people who are less fortunate than he is. You’re probably right about Juanita Tate and her sons making it look like it was a Hispanic / African-American issue. She truly showed how despicable she was. I think the thing that bothers me the most is that the politicians who allowed the back door deals are still in power – will they ever be held accountable?
